HERON’S LEA RESIDENTIAL CARE HOME

MAY 2020 NEWSLETTER

Hello and welcome to the first of what will hopefully be a regular newsletter for Heron’s Lea Residential Home. With everything that is going on at present we thought a newsletter for residents, families and staff would be a great way of keeping everyone connected not only with the events and activities we have going on here but also each other.

Enjoying the weather

Despite everything that has been going on the sun has been shining here in Westward Ho! All our residents have been making the most of the good weather and have been out sitting on the terrace or going for walks. The trees and the flowers are just starting to bloom and as ever we have an abundance of birds, rabbits and of course the visits from the resident Peacocks!

Activities & Games

All our regular entertainment guests have been unable to come in to see us but this has not deterred everyone from having fun and joining in!! ……. from music bingo,…….. indoor Olympics  ……  and paper cup pyramids with prizes of biscuit medals.

Birthdays

We have celebrated several birthdays recently for Phyllis Grace, Barbara and Derek with cakes provided by one of our wonderful chefs, Rob.

VE Day

On Friday 8th May we all joined together to remember the victory in Europe. We had a great day of singing, dancing, a quiz and decorating cakes.  Everyone observed the two minute silence and we finished the day off with tea and home-made homity pie and cakes from our Chef Carolyn.

Thank you to all the staff who decorated the lounge with bunting, balloons and flags and all who were involved in a wonderful day of celebrations.

Spotlight on Heron's Lea Staff

Amongst the many multi-skilled, talented staff we have working here at Heron’s Lea, Sandra Lee is proving to be a master baker and is often surprising us with her wonderful creations.  Sandra has always liked baking and started decorating cakes about 20 years ago when she agreed to make her brothers wedding cake and realised that she would have to ice it!!  Everyone was so pleased with the results that Sandra went on to ice more and more cakes – all completely self taught by reading books, trawling the internet and watching videos,  Sandra says she gets “great enjoyment out of baking and icing and likes playing around with new ideas”

Meet Mildred who I am sure you will agree is a fantastic showpiece of Sandra’s talents and wonderfully depicts the mood of the day

Some of Sandra’s creations, Chocolate drip cake, Easter Simnel cake and 60th birthday cake.

International Nurses Day

Wednesday 12th May marked International Nurses Day which is an annual event to celebrate the work of the nursing community and the bicentenary of Florence Nightingales birth.  A chance to ‘shine a light’ on the extraordinary work our nurses and carers do.  I am sure we would all like to thank each and every one of our carers who work at Heron’s Lea and the community and district nurses who also play a huge part in the lives of our residents.

Our Local Community

We are so lucky to be part of a caring, supportive community.  We have recently received a delivery of pizza from Dominoes Pizza.  Also Laura Sanders, who works at Herons Lodge our Day Centre, organised a socially distanced game of bingo in Torrington, and with the funds raised sent us a delicious chocolate hamper.

Also closer to home we have received lovely messages and artwork from local residents.

Thank you to everyone for all your good wishes.
